Dear Cafe members,
Well I guess some dealers do have some D700 items now, as I have seen last night that Berger Bros. has the KIT, repeat, not just the body, but the Kit is available "IN STOCK" per the website. Here is what they say on the site:

"Nikon D700 Digital SLR Outfit (12.1MP) FX Format
w/ 24-120mm VR Lens *In Stock*

Quantity in Basket: none
Code: NIK09622
Price: $3,599.99
Shipping Weight: 8.00 lbs"
from http://www.berger-bros.com/

I have pre-ordered just the body from Berger. I wonder how long that will take, to get my D700 body, now that the "KIT" is clearly in stock. I'm a little disappointed that the kit is available but not the body alone. Yes, I know that in the past I have seen the same thing happen with other bodies, people buying the "Kit" when all they need is the body and then having to offload the lens. Why is this.

And why is the kit more costly than buying the camera and lens separately???
True for the listed prices at B&H as well.
I hate to be the cynic, but . . . .

Is it possil this is an updated 24-120VR lens? tht would explain the higher kit price. Otherwise, it wouldn't make sense...

I think an updated 24-120vr was the hope when the D700/D700 kit was first announced by Nikon.
No mention was made of updating the lens, so that hope died.

I think one would have to be REALLY desperate for D700 to pay a premium for a lens that is not even well-received! I might be moved to try the 24-120 at $3399, it seems like a perfect zoom length for my shooting style...

Too much focus on bodies rather than lenses at Nikon central. The 'old' 24-120 is one of nikon's worst zooms of the modern era. Bad edge performance on DX, so FX? Maybe they have loads of them to clear, but...lots of disappointed users coming up.

After the oddball 14-24, maybe these dudes can get back with the program, now they have a wide-friendly FX body in the sights of many DX users. A 24-85 or 24-105 in f4 and VR configuration (er, like Canon have), plus a modern 20mm and a modern 28mm, with ED, Asph, modern coatings and AF-S would do nicely. For my selfish needs, at least!

To keep up with the better sensors that are at last tumbling out of the factories, one needs better lenses across the board, not just the high profile pro zooms...I need a good reason to abandon medium format sooner or later.

Its a very cunning way to shift stock of the 24-120mm VR.

If they had to bundle it, the 24-70 would make much more sense.

Is this an official Nikon bundle, or just a kit put together in-store?

I remember when the D200 came out that kits were more widely available. I bought a kit because I couldnt get a body alone fast enough.

Yeah.. I seem to recall here in the UK you pretty much had to take an 18-70 DX with one for a while, unless you were lucky.

I definately wouldn't want a 24-120 VR though...! I've not heard of a bundle here in the UK (yet)

I have the 24-120 and never noticed any of the problems people complain about, I actually like the lens very much.

Most likely a store bundle, the 24-120/VR is a lens that wasnt great on DX, and its not any diffrent on FX.

So i totally agree, a offical kit like this would be kind of odd.

Interesting, the ad has been changed from "in stock" to "call for availability" to "expected Tuesday 7/22/08".
