I am expecting to pick up my D700 this week. Was wondering which lens to mate it with. The 24-70 is mated to my D3 and also the weight is a bit restrictive. Should I get a 24-120 or use my 24-85/4.5 with it or get the 28-300 ? Just need a general purpose use lens , with least weight as am trying to keep this combo light. Fellow users on this forum which lens do you use all/most of the time on your D700 ?

Has to be a zoom? Why not your 28 1.4 or a 50 1.4?

I've heard poor reviews of the 24-120 especially as a direct comparison with the 24-70 and I imagine you'd be disappointed.

my veteran 35-70 f2.8D is the 'most used' lens on my D700 (most used lens in my camera bag actually).

mostly because that's because it's the glass i use for 'social' pix (sox).

or get the 28-300
ARRRGHJ! NOEZZ11!!!1111

i HATE those stupid superzooms. they're slow, soft and, imho, junk.

i'd suggest a straight 50mm f1.8D as a cheap and cheerful 'standard' lens for your new toy.

knowing what other glass you have would help us in making a reccomendation.

I have and use all of the lenses that you mention. If I had to keep only one it would be the 28-300 because of the range, the IQ is good enough plus the VR makes non-action shots at low ISO very doable. Each lens has it’s trade-offs that make it highly personal rather than technical or objective choice. The 24-70 has by far the best IQ but the most limited range and biggest size/weight, but also the only one with a pro level build. If size/weight are you main drivers then the 24-85 is petite compared to all the others and again the IQ is good enough. The 24-120 is second best in IQ, has VR which I find very usefull, but it’s almost as big and heavy as the 28-300. Is the 28 end wide enough for you? Etc., etc. All of them will give you very useable images, some technically better than others but all more than useable.

I think it is more complicated that just looking at a couple of reviews. As a matter of fact I have ceased reading reviews because of the cognitive dissonance that sets in when I see lovely images posted here using lenses whose mtf charts and distortion measurements look dreadful.

I recommend the 24-120 thread in the Lens Lust forum as a starting point.

I think reality is a little less dire than your "HATE" of the "stupid superzooms" (how can an inanimate object be stupid, BTW?). I have as many treasured photos on my walls taken with my late, lamented D200 and 18-200 VR as with my current D700 and 24-70. From what I have seen from some of the better shooters on this board using the 24-120, it is capable of stunning images.

And, BTW, the OP has his rather large collection of lenses listed in his original post.

My 24-70 is almost welded to my D700. The 16-35 I just bought will surely see some action but not yet. If you are comfortable toting the D3 with the 24-70, surely the D700 with 24-70 will be ok too. Also, you have a LOT of lenses listed in your signature. Many of them will work great with the D700. I don't understand why you need another lens for the new body.

Hi Marc, yes it is a good idea, I will try the 28/1.4 with the 700 and also the 24-85 which I have, a wonderful lens which I had used a lot with my first Nikon DSLR the D100, after which caught the bug and didnt ever look at this small beauty.

i used to have 24-70 in the past, now i have the 24-120 F4, LOVE IT,LOVE IT, the 24mm on the wide end is essential, the IQ is very close to the 24-70, % of keepers is even higher than the 24-70 because of VR, and the extra range is very handy for walk around, i am not trying to diss the legendary 24-70, but photography is about compromise and the 24-120 is a great balance of all, otherwise everyone will be walking around with a set of 200 F2s and more....I looked at the 28-300, 24mm is essential for my type of shooting, also the F4 depth of field is nicer and offers faster focus in general, not to mention the Nano coating magic, i shot into the sun with amazing results"kids dont try this at home"... I am also using 50mm 1.4 for indoor/lowlight, light kit...

My 50mm 1.4 is my cheapest and often times favourite lens on the d700, soon to be partnered by the 85mm 1.4. I'm interested to see how it performs as a walk around lens. I'm sure it's more versatile than most imagine.

I believe this is a good approach that will work out great, good luck with it. If you still feel you need to spend money get a fisheye or macro (the only two lenses you are still missing when I check your signature).

I love my 24-120 f4 on my D700. It's great, except for group portraits, where even at 50-60mm I am seeing more distortion than I like.

As a walk-around on the D700, I find the 28-105D to be "the lens" when considering, weight, convenience, IQ and price....you should be able to pick it up on e-bay for less than $150 US. Check out the threads on this site for comments, shots, etc. Nothing compares when considering all factors, IMO.

The only reason to buy a D3 or FX is image quality. Why put some cheap zoom on it?

I use a 35/70 2.8 I got really cheap for when I can not change lenses. Otherwise I put a prime lens on it.

50 1.8 is really not a bad lens. Mine has a focus shift and AF changes around a little in close and far shots. But it is ok. There is alway manual focus.

New 60 2.8N is one of the best lenses i have. Works on FX and DX really well.
