D7100 amazing low light capabilities

I live in Edmonton, Alberta. Although days are getting longer at 10 pm its sort of dark. I took this pic of our Golden Retriever and after processing the NEF file, this is what I got. Remember 10pm and hardly any daylight left.

Nice!! I grew up in St.albert!! I love the middle of summer where its light until almost 11pm.

What ISO was this at, its nice and clear. Ur like me, my dog is my favorite subject to photograph!!

I just picked up a D7100 a couple of days ago---so far, so good---looking forward to testing it in low light conditions with my 70-200 VR11 or even my old (very old, brought new with a new N90S!) 35-70 2.8 AF-D lens shooting the L.A. music scene...

A couple of nights ago, I tested my D7100 in a night-club @ ISO 1600 with very satisfactory results using my old Nikon 35-70 AF f2.8 lens---focusing and low light performance were superior to my older D300---set manual @ 1/50 sec. and f4 from front row---more testing to follow...

I wouldn't really call it amazing in low light. Above ISO 1600 is pushing it if IQ is a high priority, at least with my subject of birds where detail is vital. I only go to 2000 or above if desperate, but they will never be great shots unless considerably downsized. Certainly better than the D300 and maybe as good as DX will ever be, but compared to say a D800...

I wouldn't call it amazing either actually. I have my auto ISO set to 800 ISO max now. If you have high ISO NR turned on (and you take an image at 1250 or above when it applies it), your contrast gets noticeably less on any image you're going to crop.

NX2 applies some NR on RAW files automatically and randomly it seems even though I have high ISO NR turned off. Took me a while to notice that and I don't know why it still does it. Must always remember to uncheck that box.

I'll go to 1600 as fast as I need to
