D7100 and New 80-400

I am trying this combo out. When I shoot in AF-S focus will lock on very quickly at all focal lengths. When I use AF-C, focus will lock OK until I go to focal length of 300 or above. The rangefinder in the view finder will be very unstable. This also happens with AF-A. This will also happen with AF-C on my D800 with the new 80-400. Since this only happens under these focal length conditions, is this just bad holding technique or is the new lens a dud? Do not have the appropriate tripod to be able to test under more stable conditions. I use a 70-200 VRll with 2x extender with no problems locking focus handheld.

Do you have VR off??How many focus points are you useing? Do you have auto focus on lock or release? Are you shooting still objects or moving??Doug

Put it on afc d9 focus priority and leave it there

VR was on normal setting. had 11 focus points set. I am using AE-L button as AF-on and shutter button is set to release. I was shooting still objects.
