Probably should have posted this in the Cameras forum. But you bird folks are more fun. The little D7100 continues to impress. I've tried it with several different lenses now. With ample lighting it's an impressive performer.

Nikon 300mm f4 (IMO this is THE lens to match with the D7100)

As you can see in this next one, the focus tracking has no problem with a target closing at high speed.

This one's momma never taught it not to talk with food in its mouth. The prior frame was a bit OOF but it reveals the bird with its mouth wide open screeching at someone. Then this happened.

Very nice series. I have been impressed with the images I have seen out of the D7100. Wish it did not have issues with the 500 afs with TC's version 1 and II. Until that is fixed I will hold off. You say the 300 f4 is the best combo for this body. Have you tried the new 80-400 vr? That lens is stellar on the 7100. I sure hope a D400 comes out soon.

Thanks, guys. No, Jim, I haven't tried the 80-400mm. But if you are going to add to Randy's constant plugging of it I'm sure my car is going to find its way over to the local Nikon rep before too long. I already own a 200-400 so my conscience is struggling with the need for it. Though a good long travel lens would be nice...

Great shots Dan!

I'm really tempted to pick up a 7100 but I'm still waiting for the mythical D400.

Does Nikon actually pay you for advertising or just sponsor you with free equipment?

That was my plan as well but then I read something about Nikon almost never releasing new models in the summer. If I waited until September my shooting season in Alaska is pretty much done. So went ahead and got the 7100. No regrets now but I'm sure I'll have some if/when they actually do finally release a 400.

Wonderful action images of a bird that is tough to image in motion.
