D7500 "Cannot display this file"

Feb 6, 2021
Mid-shoot this morning, my Nikon D7500 started displaying the "Cannot display this file" error on-screen. Unsure of the reason for the error, I continued taking photos in case I'd be able to recover them later. A different SD card is working fine in this camera so I'm fairly certain the issue is with the card I was using during shooting. So I have a few questions:
  • Is there any chance the photos I took after the error began are on the card (and simply not accessible)? If so, how should I go about recovering them? I don't have an SD card reader for my computer (usually just plug the camera into the computer) but just ordered one.
  • After my readable photos are backed up, sounds like my best bet for "fixing" the card is to reformat it in-camera. Is this correct?
Appreciate any advice you can provide - I'm new to this.

I just googled this.

I would try to recover any files I could and reformat the card but knowing that cards don't last forever I would get a new card.

Thank you! This is how my googling ended too. I was hoping maybe the photos I took after the error were on the card somewhere! Such a bummer because this card is only about 6 months old.

I would try using recovery software before reformatting the card in camera.....just to be sure. You can search the internet for such software..... In the future, always carry at least two cards, so you can swap if you want to.
