does the d80 work with a older sb-27? i tried the camera with it and also another older speedlight (Achiever 630 AF) and i could not get either to fire..the camera acted like it wanted the onboard flash to pop up instead?

  2. try going to manual settings on the camera, set flash on auto, trial&error the exposure, like at 10 feet, f/11 @ 1/250th, let your lcd tell you what to do (the old flashes are very good on auto)

Yes, the old flashes are good on auto. I used an SB-15 on auto with my D50 on manual and actually got some pretty decent results.

and yes, Ditto...I will be getting back to you soon! Probably tomorrow.
