What would you qualify as inexpensive, but not cheap? The 50mm f/1.8 is only about $110 and would be great for most of your uses (if you can get close enough to the action that is)
  3. While not all that fast, the 18-70 is a good lens and not that all expensive. If you are starting out with nothing, a zoom might be a better choice initially. The other option would be to pick up a used 35-70 2.8. I don't have this lens, but plenty of folks around here have show really good results.

Otherwise, one of the 50's depending on budget or maybe the 35 f/2, although that won't be long enough for sports.
  4. Tamron 17-50 2.8 is a very nice lens and probly in your budget. not so much a sports lens considering the small reach though. then maybe a Nikon 70-300 or if you can wait a little get the 80-200 2.8 also a very nice lens. i use that one for when i shoot sports.
