This has probably been asked before... Anyone have any experience with a decent fast lense, attempting kids sports, you know, gyms, bad light etc...with a D80??
I'd like to hold out for a D200, but.... you know.
TIA
Jim.

you need at least f2.8 and preferably f2 or f1.8 but there are no Nikon f1.8 or f2 lenses w/ AFS so look at Canon
the 30d is a great deal w/ a dbl rebate and the 85 1.8 is USM and also dbl rebate
I have the 135/2 USM and it's a fine lens...I'm ordering an 85 1.8 for indoor BB

Randy, thank you very much for your input. I've followed your posted shots for quite awhile now.
I greatly value your diverse and 1st hand knowledge.
Question? Nikon's 85 1.8 isn't AFS ??

topher04r1, It will be after Christmas, but before the rebates expire. I'd like to keep it under 2K.

Again Gents, thanks for responding.

Jim.

no, the nikon 85 1.8 is not afs
the canon 85 1.8 is usm

the nikon 85 is a bit slow on AF on a d50 & d70s but it should be faster on a d200 (i haven't tried my 85 on my d200 yet but other non afs lenses af much faster on my d200, not as fast as afs but fast enough for everything except boys soccer or BIFs)

The Nikon 200mm F2 is AFS.

Your best bet for this is a D2Hs!

Randy...
and of course, most of my shooting is my son's BB & soccer !!
Geno,
I'll add one of my fully functional Aorta valves to my current kidney listed on ebay to finance the D2Hs w/ 300 2.8.... LOL
I am just simply in awe of the quality of pix you Gents take.
and again, thank you very much for responding to my posts.

Jim,

No matter what lens you use, the D2Hs is the ticket. Focus is blazing fast, and there is no noise. I've got tons of great shots of my kids playing basketball in poor light with nothing more than a D2H and 50 1.4D. That combo will run you about $1500, but if you can swing another $1000 the D2Hs cleans up the whole thing. The next closest thing is a D50, and I used that for a long time also. Quite frankly the D50 is one of Nikon's best kept secrets. Just about as clean as a D2Hs, and a bigger file. I wish I never sold mine to buy a D200, but the D200 has a lot more credibility when shooting as a pro.

Wow Gene, no noise reduction at ISO 1600! I see where the Hs shines over my H.

Well, put it this way:

I sold 2 D2H bodies to get one D2Hs, and it's the best thing I ever did.

(I could have used a lower ISO, but many shots I had to stop down for depth of field. I very rarely like using auto ISO.)

I have had good success with my d2x and 70-200 shot wide open (2.8) in gyms. ISO at 800 sometimes I go to High 1 (1600) but depending on they gym I usually don't have to.

Also a recently aquired 35-70 2.8 seems to get the job done as well. I can tell the difference in focus speed as it is not AFS but it is not a problem 90% of the time. This lens can be had for 300 or so. Actually if I remember correctly my lens used to be Geno's before I bought it from the guy he sold it to. I think Geno was considering buying it back, I would understand it is the best bargan I have come across in nikkons line up.
