My D80 kit lens (18-135) gave up the ghost this weekend...it was always a little noisy compared to the 18-70 that came on my prior Nikon D70s, but this weekend it started really acting fussy and squeaky, then would not auto focus at all.

Hope it's not going to be a month getting it fixed at Nikon, but I'm shopping for a replacement in any case.

    Anyone else have this problem?

This appears to be a very common problem. Apparently Nikon has unleashed on the market a substantial number of faulty lenses. Depending on where you bought it, you should insist that either the retailer or Nikon replace it. Here is a link to a discussion of on the Flickr Nikon D80 group concerning the problem (with a couple of additional links inside the thread).

    Good luck with yours.
