There will be work being done on the Jefferson Memorial starting soon which will be occurring during the Cherry Blossom Festival. It will also be going on next year during the time of the festival. I'm not sure how that will affect the event for photographers. The news reports state that there will still be access to most of the Jefferson Memorial, though when shooting a photo of the memorial I am thinking that you may end up with construction equipment or signs of the work being done in your photos.

Parts of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial will be closed to the public as the National Park Service begins a 15-month restoration project.

The east side of the memorial will be closed for construction staging, but visitors will be able to access the front of the memorial, including the chamber with the Thomas Jefferson statue. The front steps, accessible route, restrooms and the elevator will remain open as well.

The restoration is expected to be complete by May 2020.

Access to the front of the memorial, including the steps, accessible route, chamber with the statue of Thomas Jefferson, exhibit area, restrooms and elevator will remain open to the public during the duration of the project. Some areas, however, like the east side of the memorial, will be closed for construction staging.

  3. I read about that renovation project and immediately thought of how it would affect photographers wanting a few nice shots of the memorial during Cherry Blossom time. Oh, well....

  4. Thanks for posting this. For years now my bride has wanted to go to DC during cherry blossom time. We finally decided to make the trip this year. Figures we'd be just in time for the classic photo subject to be under construction.

  5. It's always a roll of the dice for people traveling to DC for the cherry blossoms; we who live here are a little more fortunate in that we can take advantage pf the good times and shrug off the bad days. The problem is the weather, which can be fickle. Some years the blossoms come earlier than expected and other years we have a cold snap or a bad storm that destroys the buds and the early flowers before they've had a chance to really blossom..... And once in a while we actually have a terrific year where all the stars (or should I say, blossoms) align and the trees are just gorgeous, bursting with beautiful blossoms and the sun is shining.....

It IS unfortunate that they are starting this work on the Jefferson Memorial before this year's cherry blossom time; they should have waited a little longer.....
