Dismal weather for today at Viera....

Discussion in 'Birds' started by Backdoctor, Dec 18, 2005.

  1. Went with Steve S. to Viera where we met Harry, Gale and Kevin. Seems whenever I go up there, its raining or overcast, and today was no different. I think I'll have to get a new tour guide if this keeps up...

Shot with my ol D100 and 300 f4 with 1.4x as well as Steve's D2Hs and 200-400 with the 1.4x on my Gitzo 1325 and wimberley.

    NIKON D2Hs    ---    450mm    f/5.6    1/640s    ISO 400

this next one, well look at the exif, we were struggling with no light:
    NIKON D2Hs    ---    550mm    f/7.1    1/250s    ISO 640

    Date/Time 18-Dec-2005 10:36:33
    Make Nikon
    Model NIKON D2Hs
    Flash Used No
    Focal Length 550 mm
    Exposure Time 1/250 sec
    Aperture f/7.1
    ISO Equivalent 640
    Exposure Bias +1
    White Balance (10)
    Metering Mode matrix (5)
    JPEG Quality (6)
    Exposure Program aperture priority (3)

this is with the D100 and again, not much light to work with:
    NIKON D100    ---    420mm    f/5.6    1/320s

its good to have your ducks in a row sometimes:
    NIKON D100    ---    420mm    f/5.6    1/640s

    another D100 shot:
    NIKON D100    ---    420mm    f/5.6    1/180s

below, shot at 640 iso and backlit mostly..
    NIKON D100    ---    420mm    f/6.3    1/1000s

550mm at 1/320 sec and 640 iso with the D2hs:
    NIKON D2Hs    ---    550mm    f/5.6    1/320s    ISO 640

a rare bird, testing out my better beamer. The only bird I shot with it:
    NIKON D2Hs    ---    280mm    f/5.6    1/320s    ISO 400

maybe someday I'll get some sunshine when I go there....:frown:

    Hi Harris

Even cloudy day pictures from Vierra leave me missing the place. It's a good thing that it isn't in my neck of the woods or I probably wouldn't have a job any more.

I was surprised to see Hooded Mergansers in your shots.....have you seen them previously in Florida? I saw about 50- of them at distance today, swimming along the ice flows in the Merrimac River.....hey probably never got invited to go south?

My shots were all to dark. I dumped all but 6 and 3 of those will prob go.

Was happy to see the Mergansers though. I have never seen them before.

Got one decent one of those.

Had a great time dispite the weather.

That Steve is a Hoot....Still laughing. Lunch was wonderful.
  5. Well, I imagine those Peregrines keep you plenty busy...

When you come down, we'll hit some hot spots...

    Hey Gale, you remember...

me saying, "Hey, look, a white thing!" I think I even made myself laugh when I said that. It sounded so dumb! Well, even though, like you guys, I have less than a handful of shots I'm even going to bother with, it was great meeting everybody, Gale, Harry, and Kevin. I can definitely see that the place has tremendous potential when the skies are a little more shooter friendly, and a fog horn isn't needed to locate your shooting partner!
  7. just some bag lady we found rummaging about...
  8. Harris,
The first image, The woodcock shot and The blonde, all great shots! the weather sometime works in your favor on these kinds of days and I think it sure did on the 3 I mentioned.

    Hey Harris,

It was great seeing you and meeting Steve. The weather was lousy but the company was great. You managed to get some good pics in. It was nice tosee the caracaras again. They have not been around lately because they moved further away after the racoons raided their nest.
  11. Oh no the dreaded red X curses foiled again

Excellent results, in less then excellent conditions.

A testament to your skill, well done.
  13. Nice pictures I realy like them.
Don't knock overcast conditions - that nice soft lighting will ensure you don't suffer from the blown highlights and blocked shadows its all to easy to get in bright sunlight.
  14. Definitely a challenging day to shoot. Got some keepers but not a lot. Went back for one last drive around after lunch and the Caracara was sitting in "the tree". Drove over to Click Pond on the way out and got a great raptor shot.

Really neat getting the Mergansers. Have never seen them.

Nice finally getting to meet Steve! Too bad there were no subjects to shoot after all the trouble of getting the better beamer set up.

As always, the company was great and so was lunch!! Caught a nasty cold though so don't know when I can get my shots pp'd.

Nice job on that Anhinga! Funny he can fly with those raggedy wings!!

  18. Nice series Harris. I really like the first three, they are kind of artsy.
  19. Even a cloudy day with a gang like you guys is a great day in my book. Love those mergansers all in a row. One of my favorite ducks.
