DK-21M- First Impressions and more to come.

Discussion in 'Nikon DX DSLR Forum' started by AFS, Jan 4, 2006.

  1. Hi all.
My DK-21M arrived today from Henry's Canada (what a sad state we're in, having to buy our accessories from all over the globe :-p ).
I haven't had a chance to use it in good light for more than a few minutes, but here are some general comments. Using with the D200, will test on D70 and with another eyecup starting tomorrow.
The DK-21M made a noticeable improvement- the finder definitely looked bigger. Contrary to the instructions, the D200's info display was perfectly visible in its entirety, and I wear glasses with -3.25 prescription. Of course, it did shorten the eyepoint a fair amount. I now have to press up awful close with my glasses so I may just shoot it when using contacts. I might try modifying a DK-17M to see if that would work better one day, but for now this seems very good.
I didn't notice any degradation in brightness, but I'll be able to give you a much better estimate on that tomorrow.
Using it with contacts helped a lot- and it gave me a very large finder image.
I stripped off the stock DK-16 eyepiece from it (glued on, and I wish I had an x-acto knife heh) and tried it with the DK-21 from the D200- I like this a lot. I will try with the smaller (and possibly better for use on this) DK-20 I use on my D70 (stock for the D70S).
I may also investigate a round eyepiece adapter for it.
Overall it seems pretty nice. I wonder what sort of effect it will have on my D70, but won't know that till I get it back tomorrow from a loan to a close friend/fellow photographer.
    for $25, a real bargain.

Will post pics of the eyepiece ASAP- wish I'd thought to take one before removing the DK16 though. Comments after more D200 use and D70 use plus eyecup trials will be posted right here.
Thanks for reading. Not as entertaining as my usual thought-out replies and threads can get, but it's something to chew on <img>

    hi harrison-

thanks for posting your impressions. that's bad news for me. i already have problems seeing the entire viewfinder when i'm wearing glasses, so i probably won't be able to see it in its entirety with the DK-21M.

  3. Does the DK-21M help with manual focusing? Does the magnification make the image pop into focus any better?

Not sure that I would actually need to have the view appear larger otherwise. I think it's large enough for me as is, given that I wear glasses.
