Does the SB-600 communicate with the d40x?

I want to get a speedlight for my camera, but I want to make sure they will work together. Right now I just have an old school speedlight, that just fires. I want to be able to put a sb-600 on it, and shoot in automode if I need to.

Anyone with d40x and speedlight experience? HELP! :)

    thanks

Sure, see page 99 of the D40X manual - 2nd and 3rd paragraphs.

The D40X cannot do the Commander/Remote wireless operation, unless you add a SU-800 or SB-800 commander, when then it can. But - the flash does fully work in every way on the hot shoe of the D40X.

  3. yeah i have both. they work great together. only problem is d40x doesn't have the ability to control a flash wirelessly. to get a flash to work wirelessly on a d40x, you have to have the SB-800 on the hot shoe as the master, and a second flash then can be used wirelessly.

Ohhh yeahhh..... The instruction manual. Doh!

Sounds like I'm going to have to go with the 800. I would like the ability to control remote flashes in the event that I needed them. No sense in spending the money on a 600, and then having to upgrade in the future.

    Thanks!

just to make sure, you will need an SB800 (or a SU 800) on the camera and either SB600 or SB800 as remotes, you cannot control an SB800 from the D40x without another SB800 on camera.

Yeah, thanks. I was looking at that. I'll probably go with an sb800. I thought the 800 would fire older models than the 600, like say the sb400.

    I may be wrong though.

either the SB800 and/or SB900 can work in commander mode (or the SU800). the SB600 can work on camera and on remote (no commander). SB400 just work on camera and/or on ttl cable (SC-28 or SC-29, also the old SC-17). you can't control the SB400 from any other (no remote mode).

I used to have a D40x, an amazing camera, which still suprises me with the 70-300VR (my brother in law inherited the combo from me). I also had an SB400. Only missing thing is the commander mode. As you can see on my signature, I have a lot of flashes, and currently use them on a mix... the old ones with poverty wizards at home, SB800 and SB900 for CLS when on the go...
