Dog question

Okay with the upcoming move back to the USA we are wanting to get a new family dog when we get back. Other then the last 4 years in the UK I have always had dogs in the house, Dalmatians.

Right now we are looking at Weimaraners. Does anyone have person experience with this breed?

Paul, I love my stay in the UK. This is my second time living over here. The first time I was here for three year and this time for four. To tell the truth it's been over 2 1/2 years since I have been back in the USA.

I do like it over here, but I am excited to get back and spend some time in the states.

Personally nothing more friendly and loves kids more than the labs and Goldies.

For large dogs I too would suggest a golden. Gentle and good with kids. For smaller dogs I have never been around one better with kids than my Sheltie.

Hey, can I put in a plug for an unlikely candidate? Consider the poodle. Give them a decent haircut and they are not at all foo-foo. And contrary to popular opinion, they are a german hunting breed. Very good with youngsters, and as teritorial as you can get. I think they make a perfect house dog.

Todd, while I have no experience with the breed you've asked about, don't let these other guys steer you into some other breed. :wink:
If you're going to consider another type dog, keep in mind the English Bulldog.
While they're a bit on the vain side..

having been involved with bird dogs for a number of years I have seen more mean and temperamental wiemies than enuf. they cant all be that way, just my 2cents. What are your interests outside of Bailey and photog? is it just a pet?

It says something to me when you don't see many Weimaraners around. I would think that a medium size Lab would be a fine alternate. We have a chocolate one in addition to a Jack Russell and a Tennessee Walker Coon Dog (all house dogs). Now a JR is something else. Never a dull moment! The Lab is a sweet youngster and wants to be close. A big baby might be a good description.

Two of the best dogs I ever had were Springer Spaniels.
One died a year ago and the other is now 14 and still thinks
he is a puppy. Although his old bones won't let him tear around
like he used to. These two dogs are/were extremely tolerant
of my daughter pulling their ears and generally abusing them.
Extremely friendly, very active, high maintenance dogs.

From what I have heard, because I have been researching
new dogs. (mine won't be around much longer) weimers
do not like to be left alone. So if you leave them alone during
the day you will not have a happy dog when you return.

Have you thought about a beagle? They are said to be a
wonderful family dog. They only shed once a year and as
long as they get lots of love, are reported to be wonderful
pets

Beagles are very good. I still think a springer or Brittany is a fine choice. Beagle, lab, golden, hell I love em all. they never say no, always want to go where you are going and sleep with you without prequalifying it.

It is amazing how you tell the dog to get off the bed, and then
you wake up in the morning and they are snoring in your face.

I have to add. We had a boxer. She raised four kids. Very smart. Need to start training early, 12 weeks. But they are funny, she was crazy as a three dollar bill. Loved water, beach boat riding in van, went to base ballgames and played outfield. lolol... My best friend. Very protective.

I miss her alot after all these years.

I appreciate it Gale, it's just too bad Hannah won't pose like this anymore. Its like she got to a certain age and said 'Enough'!
But, at least I got some different things before she went on strike.
