This is a section of an attempt at focus stacking with mt Sony a7 r4. This camera doesn't have built in FB like the Z7 I own. My attempt was a failure but I thought this section looked interesting - or at least colorful.

Another very appealing image. Consider doing a whole series of at least six images in this style of this subject without using focus bracketing.

Good idea - thanks. I am not saying I think FB is the cat's meow but I do want to decide whether to keep the camfi, get a macro for the Z7 and not sell it (FB is so easy on it), or just decide not to FB at all.

Definitely not good to say when photographing your dog's toy.

Seriously, have you not gotten the Camfi to work properly? What is the primary problem you're experiencing with it?

I have to go through the settings again to get the focus bracketing to work. I know I need to put the Sony on manual focus and the lens on AF. I then need to try the different focus modes on the camfi app.

That seems really odd to me. I don't know anything about the Sony system but I would think you would want to ensure that the images are being shot in auto focus. To make that happen, I would think you would need both the camera and the lens to be set to auto focus.

The doc is not good. They have something about changing the AF to manual. I will have to try more options.

"To use Auto focus, please tag [MF/AF] button to switch the camera to the AF mode. Then set the AF mode to Free Point on the camera setting. To auto focus, just tap the screen, the camera will try to focus to the tap point there.
To use Focus Stacking, please tap [MF/AF] button to switch the camera to MF mode at first, then tap the Focus stacking button. There is no limitation for the steps of Focus stacking of CamFi app. It only limits by the lens."

This is typical of a Chinese company producing a manual that is poorly translated into English. Notice that it says to switch the camera to MF mode at first. If that were to be taken literally, one would infer that it means to change the camera to auto focus later at some point during the process.

I agree that will be my first test but I might not be able to get to that today.

If your Sony camera requires both the camera and the lens to be set to auto focus to achieve auto focusing, it's surely guaranteed that that has to happen before the process of capturing the series of focus-bracketed images begins.
