Doing some math d700 vs D3

Discussion in 'Nikon FX DSLR' started by hotrod4x5, Jul 1, 2008.

  1. D700 $2999.95
    MB-D10 $ 239.95
    EN EL 4 109.95
    Charger $119.95 or $239.95
    Battery cover door $34.95

    $3504.75 or 3624.75

With D3 prices as low as $4500 now, I wonder if someone who buys a D700 and gets all those accessories is nuts?!

  2. that is

an interesting way of thinking about it. I for one plan to wait about 2 years before the acqusition of my next DSLR. I know there will people dumping their D300s for the D700, and it seems kinda silly to me, people never seem to happy with their gear for some reason or other

  3. Maybe, but this nut has still saved $1k, and you can't take apart a D3 to make it smaller.

But doesn't getting the newest greatest thing automatically make all your pics better?

there is absolutely no advantage buying EL4s for this body with the grip unless you already have a D2/D3 and just want an extra battery. That also negates the need for an additional charger.

  6. Especially with the grip---since everybody knows that a BIG camera takes great pictures!!!

  7. Ahem. But isn't that what the d300 did for you?

Don't mind me. I'm caught in a time warp, and can't find any reason to upgrade my pair of d200s. Not that my wife would let me anyway .

  8. If you are looking to upgrade from D???, then the D700 seems to be a good option, and it save $1,000 under the D3. However, if rugded is what you need, the extra cost of the D3 may well be worth the money. For me, I have the D3 and don't plan to upgrade to a D700, but I will install the new firmware.

I love these new introductions, they continues to push the product for more and hopefully better features. Actually my next purchase will be the new PC-E 45mm lens, then possibly the SB-900. I can always use another wireless flash.

  10. Timewarp, i dunno. Frank, I bought my D200 a few weeks after the D300 reviews were out and people thought I was crazy - i told them sometimes you don't need to mess with perfection (god I love that metering)

    "Perfection" is by definition unattainable.

As for metering, I use Center-weighted metering which I find more reliable than Matrix metering and I get identical EVs from both the D200 and D300; with Matrix metering the results are generally close enough. Presumably, the D700 will implement Matrix metering the same as the D3 and D300.

Does anyone know why Nikon decided to choose 700 as the name of the camera? Was there a reason for this?

  13. It was because they introduced it on the 7th month at 00:00 hours.

    Ah!

Now we have accurate information about the D3X. It will be introduced in March at 10:00 (roman X) Tokyo time.

I hope they don't introduce any models at five to twelve in December.

I'm lost as the need for an additional charger and the battery door?

    D700 + grip + 1 more battery = good to go

  16. That's fine by me

And I thought it meant that it was 10 times better then my D70

  18. Seems the D700 would be the perfect 2nd camera for a wedding/event D3 photographer used to FX framing. Who needs 9 FPS to shoot a bride and groom? And it'll save at least $1000. Seems to be a very well-reasoned alternative to the D3 for the studio/event specialist, while the D3 will rule sports/PJ work.

For me, it is up to how low D3's price goes for me to justify a purchase.

D3 $4000 (maybe it will go that low?) vs. D700 $2999

Tough choice, but always good to have choices, am I right?
