Eating sequence - heron catches eel

I was watching a sandhill crane nest when a little blue heron caught my eye. He was in the process of catching an eel of some type. (Let me know id if you know it.)

Really a great series, Allan. Amazing how one's luck seeing things like this increases in proportion to the time spent in the field

I'm pretty sure that is not an eel believe it or not but a large salamander. The red gills on the outside of its head in the first image are the clue.

Its amazing to watch an animal eat something so large. I think a large part of the battle is to get the prey in a position where it can slide down the gullet.

It is always fun watching an animal trying to eat something large. Will it get it down - yes - no - not sure - success.
