This was the location for the City of Edoras in the Lord of the Rings. It's a good 40km of dirt track from the nearest sealed road. The Golden hall itself was built on the small rocky hillock on this side of the river, just to the right of where the river emerges from the mountains.

New Zealand must have some of the most beautiful scenery on this planet. I've watched all 3 LOTR but don't remember Edoras. Of course it's hard to understand some of the names they used. Is it the walled city with the dead tree in the courtyard? The mountain range looks familiar from the lighting of the torches on the mountain tops. Post more scenic shots! They're beautiful!!

Edoras was the main stronghold of Rohan - that's where the huge wooden hall and all the horse riders were.
Peter Jakson used huge chunks of the Southern Alps to do "The Lighting of the Beacons" and this was the starting point.
