With the sun low in the sky, I really liked the quality of the light, but had some trouble nailing exposure and focus.

I like #1 the way the bird sits in the reeds/grass but I'd get him out of the center and take some off the top and crop out the water in the foreground

Love the backlighting on no.1. I agree with the others regarding playing with the crop. Certainly set the bird slightly off center and the water adds nothing IMO. Maybe also try a 4x5 landscape format. I'm not on a calibrated monitor but the shady side of the bird looks a bit blue. Maybe a selective WB tweak on the bird.

I do like all of your suggestions regarding cropping. Unfortunately, there aren't many pixels left afterwards...
