My husband and I had an overnight in Nairobi on our vacation, and we made sure to visit the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. They had some rhino, lots of baby elephants, and even a resident warthog with baby.

They used blankets after they lost some babies to pneumonia.

This is one of the elephant keepers. He gets to sleep in there with her (that's his bunk behind him).

The keeper took these with my iPhone.

They kept him in a pen only while guests were there. Otherwise all the animals just roam around freely. The staff learn to be quick.

My husband's favorite resident of the orphanage.

What a cool experience. Those are incredible animals. Most have been weird to have been that close!

Thanks for sharing the pictures

EDIT: P.S. I absolutely love #3! Excellent work!

Nice set. Thanks for posting.
Thanks!

Nice set ...
I don't think I'd want to sleep with a elephant though ...
imagine that trunk coming up under the blanket in the middle of the night ... would scare you to death LOL

Thanks! She did like to explore with her trunk, too. His dinner was delivered to him while we were standing there, and he stuck it up on his bunk. She kept trying to get to it with her trunk. It's hard to keep an animal that big (a ton?) from something it wants!

Thanks! My husbands likes the support. :)
He did warn me when I got that close to take the picture. You can see that the mom is watching me attentively, so close to her baby.

Thanks, Scott! It was aweseome. I've never touched an elephant before, it was incredible.
And thanks about #3! I think that one is my favorite, too. It was just a chance grab, but I'm really happy about it.
