Epson R800 and printing now

I have a Epson R800 which is lying dormant since quite some time. The printer is very good though I had to print using Qimage. Besides, reprinting after a few days gap entailed running the cleaning cycle etc. Eventually prints became so cheap outside I gave up the idea and have been using commercial services outside eversince. (Quality obviously is not 100%)
My question is, I am sure printers and inks have come a long way since then. What are the advancements if any since then, technologically and economically in inhouse printers ?
Thanks

I don't have a photo printer at the moment, but have been looking into it. Reading up on it, there seems to be agreement that an Epson 3880 is actually less expensive than some of the cheaper models by virtue of shipping with a full set of 80 ml ink carts. Buying a lesser model and the extra ink to make them comparable makes the 3880 about $500 cheaper. The 3880 is $929 at B&H after the mail in rebate.

From what I have read the new machines clog less.
