I apologize for the long read. Some of us in St. Augustine recently lost another old friend and Nikon guy, not a Cafe member but a classic person. My thoughts...

" 'Lost another good old friend. For years, Ernie would show up early at the Alligator Farm to photograph birds. As nice as anyone could be, he was a contemporary of my father...in his late 80's...and we had that bond, often comparing stories. My Dad is Dutch, Ernie was German, and both had many similar experiences, good and bad. He was a passionate photographer and bird lover. I remember quite often setting my camera down when the birds were active, just to hear his stories from back in the day...the REAL day. Ernie recently left us. I'll always thank him for his time, his stories, and his adoration of birds and wildlife, and his ability to capture it in his camera. This is Ernie's last email to me.

"Hi Bobby,
I hope that you are well and enjoying photography. Circumstances have slowed me down, especially the sun has gotten to me with producing squamous cell tumors on my forearms and Basel cell lesions on my upper back. I am healing but avoiding to go out between 10 AM and 4 PM interferes with our hobby. Then there was the adventure with my new HP computer. My wife and I got our new, identical machines at the same time about seven months ago. Her HP “all in one” worked well from the start while mine was very erratic. Communication with service people in India was very complicated and we asked our longtime computer specialist for help. He send verification that the machine (still under warranty) was defunct from the start and a replacement was sent eventually. Now I am still struggling with Windows 8 but it is getting better day by day.
I went to the Alligator Farm last Sunday, from 9 AM to 10 AM. It was good to see old friends again, especially Cody who told me about his forthcoming wedding with a reception to be held in the “Maximo area.”
I walk with our dog at daybreak and at sunset and try to be useful at home. I hope you are well and life is good to you,
Ernie"

Sorry to hear about the loss of another dear friend. I always enjoyed the early morning gathering at the Alligator Farm. Losing friends is such a hard reminder that we should appreciate each hour and each day and value our family. Kindness, generosity and taking time with others is important. What will people say about us when we are gone?
