Fair Isle, Shetland Islands, Scotland

Discussion in 'Landscapes, Architecture, and Cityscapes' started by bobhoge, Jun 20, 2007.

  1. On our recent adventure from Norway to Iceland, the first visit was Fair Isle in the Shetland Islands, about 60 miles north of the coast of Scotland, 25 miles from the nearest landfall. It covers just over 2 square miles and has a population of only 70.

Our day here was the only one with a lot of cold and some rain, what we expected for most of the trip. The bad weather made for an improvised landing point near the southwest corner of the island.

Looking toward some of the few homes:

We hiked up along the cliffs on the west side of the island:

Over 500,000 birds nest on this island, but most were on the opposite coast:

This Northern Fulmar was nesting here:

This isle is famous for its knitwear from the locally grown wool:

While very isolated, they still keep in touch with the rest of the world:

  2. the lighthouse image is very nice, if you could just crop the bottom a little.

  3. Exactly what I wanted to say.
