I haven't compared but my humble f/1.8 AF non-D is one of the fastest focusing lenses lenses I own. Up there with the 200 f/2 and 70-200 VR.

Is their a slow focusing 50mm ? I have owned the 1.4 D, the 1.8 D, and I use a 50mm 1.8G at work regularly. They all are fast enough I cant tell a difference in focus speed. On my D3 at work, they all are super fast, but I cant tell a difference from the D3 and my D7000.

The camera makes a big difference, and I would think on the lower level cameras that the Af-S would be of great help. From what I've read, the 50 1.8G is the fastest, but not sure if the difference is noticeable. I have it (just got it today) and thought the focus was great. Love that I can shoot it wide open!

To those of you that have compared them, which focuses the fastest?

How fast is fast enough for you, more importantly do you wish fast or accurate, sometimes fast doesn't mean accurate, i.e. sharp.

I use 50mm f1.4 AFD and it is fast enough with D700, my other 50mm f1.2 AiS on FE2 or F2 is sweet lens and I have to do all focusing manually much slower than any AFD or AFS counterpart.

The 50 1.4G is a slow focuser.

The ones that I've tried, I would rank them like this (fastest first):

1. 50 1.8D on a pro body
2. Sigma 50 1.4 HSM
3. 50 1.8G (just a smidge slower than the Sigma 50, I would say they are almost the same)

The 50 f1.8 AF is really fast on my F5. The helix is loose and the F5 has a powerful focus motor.

The 50 f1.4G is very slow to focus. I haven't tried the new 1.8G.

Just picked up a MINT 50mm 1.4d off Craigslist for $280. The focus is nice and quick. Thanks guys!

Im not having any issues with out of focus shots in the dark, and it's actually not that bad at 1.4. Focus speed is my main priority, and luckily, the D3 manhandles this lense.

The sigma is easily the fastest focuser but its sloooow in comparison to the 2.8 zooms and long tele's:biggrin:

I'm very surprised with the focus speed. On a D3, this 1.4 D lens focuses almost like my 80-200 afs. Im picking up a 50 1.8G tomorrow. I'll let you guys know which is faster on a D3.

When I first got the 17-55 2.8, I thought, damn this is fast. Then I tried the 70-200 VRII and that was faster still. Then I tried the 200 f/2 and that is even faster than the 70-200.
