Hey all,

After years and years of wanting an FX camera, I finally took the plunge and purchased a D750 from a fellow Cafe member. Should arrive this week! As you can see from the lenses in my sig, nothing is great for walkaround use on the D750. I'm going to sell a few of the DX lenses and pick up a nice FX walkaround. It seems most must choose between the 24-120mm f/4G ED VR and the 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 ED VR. I'm looking for Cafe member's recommendations specifically :)

Thank you!

The 24-120mm f/4 VR isn't the greatest lens in any one metric, but it's the most useful lenses you can own. If you want a small prime the 35mm 1.8 ED FX G prime is the way to go. Sharp and fast to focus.

I bought a 24-120 F4 for my D810.

It is a great lens for when I just want to use one camera and one lens.

Here is the Tosco Emilian Apennines in Italy. I just took the 24-120 along.

Out of those, I'd probably go with the 28-300mm...but...

if you don't "need" VR, there are plenty of legacy lenses out there - old screw drive ones that are great of which I've owned a few and prefer the renderings of the older lenses over the newer ones.

All of them also have built in macro modes, if you fancy having a macro lens with you too.

I had (in the bottom of a closet) the old 24-120mm D, and hated it. I think there have been three updates since then, but that one has scared me off that lens.

I’m sure the latest f/4 lens is great and I like the idea of that focal range.

My 24-120 VR is my favorite, but when I want a fun workout, and to remember the old days, I use my old manual focus 105/2.5, or the 28-105AF-D for some poor man's macro.

I'm surprised the 24-85mm VR isn't mentioned. That lens is probably sharper than the 24-120mm f4 VR and is slightly smaller. If you went with the 24-85mm VR, you could probably also pick up the 70-300mm AF-P FX VR lens as well.

The focal range of the 24-120mm is just so convenient as a walkaround lens. My average focal length is 85mm and the 24-85 would give me no room on the long end unless I carried a second lens. I think the OP is looking for ONE lens that covers most walkaround subjects. FWIW, when walking around cities, I pair a 24-120 with the 14-24 for interiors, etc.

OP did mention the 28-300mm VR. Just throwing in the 24-85mm VR + 70-300mm AFP VR as an alternative, since the latter would be generally sharper and would probably be priced similar.
