FH Opening Game

Discussion in 'Sports Photography' started by Aqualung, Sep 4, 2008.

  1. Shot my oldest daughter's Varsity season opener (away) game today....They ended up in a 1-1 tie against a strong team that went to the semi-finals last year. Coach was pleased.

Tried the TC1.4 on my Siggy 120-300 for awhile but then went w/out. Sure wish I had a 2nd body for the up close shots, but oh well.

D300, used D2X Mode I for a change, CW (6mm), tried Dynamic 9 PT, but it kept getting adjacent players (wrong) so I switched back to single.

Shadows were tough, tried some Dodge on some faces in post.

    EXIF intact, C&C welcome...

    1. Oooh, stick on ball

    7. More pressure, we dominated in that respect.

  2. Excellent shots Chris. Really nice work.

I have been having success lately using a LEVELS adj locally. Making a local selection on my highlites and shadows in CS3. Then a quick global highlite/shadow tool adj. Seems to be working nicely on my high contrast outdoor shooting. Of cause if you are too far gone, you may have to dodge.

  3. Nice set of images No. 6 is sweet. I'm going to shoot some college level FH this weekend I'm using your stuff as a lesson in how to shoot the game.

  4. chris.... awesome shots
    that stick on ball.... incredible
even more amazing, is that, even at a shutter speed of 1/1600 there is still motion in the stick...

    now... that is some speed

  5. Thanks Mike, unfortunately I'm using PSE 6...but I may try NX/NX2 for the .jpgs for that local adjustment...

Thanks Brooks, the thing I like about FH is there are lots of stops, but that gives you time to set up for a play, like the player ramping up to hit the ball.

Thanks Greg, yeah it's moving! I was shooting 8FPS (NiMH in the grip) and barely got the ball in the frame after coming off the stick. Here's the next pic in the sequence....after #6 above.

well done Chris you nailed these

  7. Chris looking pretty good, hopefully I'll catch up with you for a game. Might check to see whats up next week in Algonquin as I am shooting a lot of golf up your way and that doesn't take that long.

  8. Thanks Mark & Geoff...Geoff Mon the 8th, 7PM home opener game under the lights, should be 'fun'...

  9. Just saw that. I am in Westborough for Nipmuc Regional Golf in the afternoon, depending on when I get out I might just head over that way and catch up with you.

  10. Hey Chris,

Great shots. I really like #1. You did a nice job of capturing the expressions. What are your thoughts on the teleconverter in terms of the picture quality?

    Thanks for sharing.

    Take care,
    Brent

  11. thanks Brent...the 1.4 isn't bad, but I've found the 2.0 soft (Sigma doesn't make a 1.7, AFAIK).

Geoff, I'll send you a note...

Good stuff here Chris. Are you using ADL? Do you own Capture NX? Are you shooting raw? I played briefily with one of you pics, and I think DL will open some of those face shadows, but not having the d300 I don't know how it works in camera

    excellent shots.

  15. Thanks much Frank, Matthew & Tim. Tim, I do use ADL occasionally, but not here. I tend to stay away from it during sports, not sure why, exactly.

I do have CNX, but I tend to shoot .jpg as I'm shooting several hundred shots and don't have the time/patience to edit 'em all in RAW. But, I'm tempted to try CNX for those local control points which work on .jpgs, I think.

Great series, Chris. You did an excellent job with the harsh light.

  17. Fine action shots Chris!

  18. thank you kindly Jim & Fred...

  19. Nice stuff Chris. FH is one of the most difficult since they rarely look u while playing to get some good expressions. Amandas games starts next week. Dont tell her but this is one of the most painful sports to watch.

  20. LOL, thanks Mike, it is a slow game w/ all those starts & stops....
