First 15 Minutes With the 200-500 VR

Discussion in 'Lens Lust' started by bobbyv, Oct 12, 2017.

  1. D7200, f/5.6, 500mm, 1/125, iso 800, on a tripod, VR off. Shot 15 minutes after the UPS guy left. Nice looking lens, nice weight and balance. I'm ready to walk a few miles with it. Fast enough focus in late afternoon (dim) light. Turning the zoom ring so much to go from 200 to 500 will take some getting used to. No sharpening applied to this shot. I'm no tech guy so I'll just say that I like it, look forward to getting out tomorrow. I'm spoiled by the 300 2.8 so we'll see how it stacks up. Interested in others' opinions.

    This one was handheld.

  2. Those shots look pretty good, but I"ll be waiting to see what you think of this lens after you've had a chance to really use it. I am on the fence about getting one, as I have (and like) the 80-400.

  3. VR on this lens rocks. These initial shots look awesome. Tack sharp.

  4. Hi Bobby, I'm in the same position as Fred in being on the fence about this lens until I see what it can do in the AF area on moving subjects, so I'm waiting on you. Thanks.

  5. The only thing it can’t do as well is DOF
    Those shots look great

Bobby, try it without tripod and VR on.
You'll be surprised how good the VR works on this lens.

  9. Yeah, gotta do a little more bg planning.

  10. It's not 2.8 bg for sure but it's not objectionable by any means. For the $$$ (or lack thereof) everybody should have one.

  11. I think it's knockin' on f4 quality BG's at 1/4th the price (and 1/2 the weight) :D
Wonder what a Nikon 500 f2.8 might cost??

As Will and many others have shown, this lens is incredible. Inexpensive & lightweight.
