I just received my Sigma 120-400mm lens and took a couple of shots with it. I am very happy with the quality of the images I have gotten on my D700. I would have liked to have the Nikon 200-400mm but its way out of my budget. I am real happy with the images Im getting for the $900 I got in this lens. Just thought Id share in case anyone is looking for a long range zoom.

This one was taken from about 10ft away at 400mm 1/60 f9 ISO 1250 on tripod

I took these at f9 because I will be shooting at this f stop most of the time to get best sharpness. With the ISO range on the D700 I dont think it will be a problem to shot this lens a little stopped down for the added sharpness.

Mike,

It is too dark tonight so I will take a couple of shots at either end of the zoom range at max f stop. I will post them here tomorrow.

Mike,

It is cloudy and raining here today so I took a couple of quick pictures for you to see taken at the extreme focal range and at max f stop.

This one was taken at 400mm f5.6 at ISO 3200

Hi Bob,
congratulations on your purchase. It seems to be a really decent lens.

I keep wondering about this lens, looks like we aren't getting an AF-S version of the 80-400mm anytime soon, maybe this would be a reasonable alternative. I am happy with my Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8. Is the 120-400mm made in Japan?

My Sigma 120-400mm says made in Japan on the box. I am very satisfied with the images Im getting with this lens. I am not a pro just someone who enjoys taking pictures. I wanted a lens to use for birds and occasional sports. I didnt want to spend more than $1200. And I was interested in this lens and focal length. I read some reviews where I found mixed reviews. I took a chance and bought the lens. For me it is worth every penny of the $900 I spent.

I have this lens as well, bought it to use at air shows and have to say I am very pleased with it. At F8 / F9 it is a very decent performer. No complaints here. Same as you Bob, not a pro and was reluctant to shell out major bucks on the Nikkor. AF on the lens is very snappy and the OS is a bit noisy and possibly a shade slower than on my 70-300VR. lens is made in Japan.

Here is one at 400mm and F9

OK, now you guys have convinced me to look at getting this as my next lens. I like the idea of having a quailty zoom that goes to 400mm, my 70-300mm VR covers a lot of ground but doesn't always have the reach I need for some things.
