Does anyone have experience with the epson perfection series of scanners. I get asked from time to time to fix scanned images and sometimes the scan is too bad to do anything with. Any other recommendations would be helpful also. I'm trying to keep it under $500.

    Epson 4990

I don't remember the exact price but I have an Epson Perfection 4990 Photo and it is great.
  3. I have the Epson 4990 and it does a great job. I also have my Epson 3200 for sale if you are interested. (Not pro version, $150 shipped). The 4990 is noticeably better than the 4990 on 35mm. However, the 3200 does very well on medium format scans.

By the way, the pro version includes calibration software and IT8 targets, and a better Silverfast Ai scan software. The pro version of the 4990 is probably one of the best in the $500 price range on the market.

I have a epson 4870 which has USB and Firewire (really fast scans!) and it is a great scanner, I think it was replaced last year by the 499?

Anything from Epson in the 400-500 price range is a great scanner. I use the silverfast software for all scans, and it works great.

  6. I have the 3200. If the I use the Epson Smart Panel, the result is Ok to print at the same size.

For editing I use Epson Scan set to 1200 DPI and have better results.

What scanned DPI do you guys use for editing?

Thanks for the replies. I think that I'm going to get the 4990. I haven't decided if the pro version is worth the extra $100 for the software.
