Flower Macros - comments please

Discussion in 'Macro, Flowers, Insects, and Greenery' started by johnaalex, Sep 14, 2008.

  1. I bought the wife some flowers for her birthday I thought why not take advantage of the situation and take some pictures. These were all taken using a D300 with Sigma 150 2.8 on a tripod. I will admit to some touching up with Photoshop and some careful cropping, but most are basically straight from the camera.

Some very nice results, John. The ones I like best (in order)?

#5 - Perfect composition IMO, lovely shades of yellow, and the overall slightly soft focus conveys a mood of peace and tranquility.

#11 - Excellent DOF control, a nice variety of complementary colors, and very pleasing bokeh in the OOF areas.

#8 - Good flowing composition, although to my eye the red and orange do clash a bit.

Nice set John, to me 7 and 11 are the stand out pictures of the group however.

I hope your wife enjoys the flowers once you are finished with them!

  4. not sure what you were going for in the first four but I like 5 the best.

  5. I was just trying to see if the effect of using a shallow DoF was pleasing to the eye. So far most comments suggest it is, but I don't expect everybody to agree with me and them on that.

    Glad you like number 5.

  6. Nice set. I agree with SoCalBob's comments exactly.

  7. The beauty of Macro is; whatever you like is "good." Once in a while an image just jumps out at you. That's the one I process. :)

  8. I like this series quite a bit. Always a fun thing - Buy some flowers for someone and then get some good photo subjects. I find the colors a little muted, otherwise, I like what you've done here.
