CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL MY FRIENDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

1930's 1940's, 50's, 60's and early 70's ![/FONT][FONT=&quot]

[FONT=&quot]First, we survived being born to mothers who drank while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos.[/FONT]​

[FONT=&quot]They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for any illness....[/FONT][FONT=&quot]
[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints.[/FONT][FONT=&quot]
[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.[/FONT][FONT=&quot]
[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.[/FONT][FONT=&quot]
[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle...[/FONT][FONT=&quot]
[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds , KFC, Subway or Nandos.[/FONT][FONT=&quot]
[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn't open on the weekends, somehow we didn't starve to death![/FONT][FONT=&quot]
[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.[/FONT][FONT=&quot]
[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Toffees, Gobstoppers, Bubble Gum and some bangers to blow up frogs with.[/FONT][FONT=&quot]
We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because.......[/FONT][FONT=&quot]
[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!![/FONT][FONT=&quot]
[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.[/FONT][FONT=&quot]
[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.[/FONT][FONT=&quot]
[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of old prams and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and dens and played in river beds with matchbox cars.[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo Wii , X-boxes, no video games at all, no 999 channels on SKY,[/FONT][FONT=&quot]no video/dvd films,
no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them![/FONT][FONT=&quot]

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were noLawsuits from these accidents.[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

Only girls had pierced ears![/FONT][FONT=&quot]
[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time...[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays,[/FONT][FONT=&quot]
[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them![/FONT][FONT=&quot]

Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet![/FONT][FONT=&quot]

[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

RUGBY and CRICKET had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! Getting into the team was based on[/FONT][FONT=&quot] MERIT[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

Our teachers used to hit us with canes and gym shoes and bully's[/FONT][FONT=&quot] always [/FONT][FONT=&quot]ruled the playground at school.[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.[/FONT][FONT=&quot] They actually sided with the law![/FONT][FONT=&quot]

Our parents didn't invent stupid names for their kids like 'Kiora' and 'Blade' and 'Ridge' and 'Vanilla'[/FONT][FONT=&quot]

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO [/FONT][FONT=&quot]DEAL WITH IT ALL ![/FONT][FONT=&quot]

Brings back lots of memories from being a kid and agree with every part. Not like the kids/parents of today.

A guy I work with his wife is pregant and I guess she is really big. I made a joke wouldn't it be funny if she was having twins. His comment was the first thing he would do is sue the Dr. for being wrong. Ahhhh gotta love it.

Just to comment on the first part...we also now have alot less SID'S and babys being born with defects caused by those behaviors...

I'm a 60's child and can add to this so easily! we used to have chores to do before school and after school once homework was done. Fun was picking apples then peeling and slicing them to be dried on corrogated sheet tin. Food was gathered from the garden, milk and butter from our cows, I could certainly add more if y'all want it - oh can't leave out the churning butter! It was not with an electric churn, it had a wooden plunger and it would take a long while of churning to make perfect butter - my shoes and school clothes were often bought with money from our extra milk, butter, eggs, and produce. I played in the dirt, I ate veggies straight off the vines, I rode my bike or my horse just about everywhere. We didn't have to worry about the safety of goodies at Halloween - I grew up where everyone knew each other and if a crisis came up, the whole community would pitch in to help. I could g o on forever - how I feel for my kids having to grow up in the city and not have a clue about where green beans REALLY come from!

Now Jake, you know they have to come from another place BEFORE they get to the grocery store! LOL :wink: I used to crawl under my aunt's house and build roads for diecast tractors to run on - I often played cowboys and Indians with my cousins, went hunting with my Dad, started drinking coffee when I was around 6.

How true! Looking back I wonder how most of us survived for some of the stuff we played with was deadly by the standards of today. We made our own fun and enjoyed doing it.

How many remember the real chemistry sets back then? I think they were made by Gilbert. I mean the ones with the good chemicals like potassium nitrate and other energetic goodies? A kid gets caught with a Gilbert today and they will be spending a few days at Guantánamo Bay.

And kids today complain and think they have problems...

When was the last time you saw a pick-up game in the vacant lot? Where the kids got themselves organized, chose teams, settled their own disputes. Doesn't happen; parents too involved. Not only that, there are no more vacant lots!
