I just picked up a Gary Fong Lightsphere II with the amber top included. Mine is the Cloud. Here is the amber top.

What's your opinion of the chromedome?

You know it looks like I could order another white top that was cheaper and line it with foil shiny side out. Stupid idea?

I picked up a "like Gary Fong" lightshphere for $12.00 plus shipping. It works just as good as my friend's $93 Gary Fong. For things that are non machanical, I like to shop around and find the same thing but way cheaper. This lightsphere is a perfect example. I'm sure the Lightsphere II will do great however... (not bragging) I spent a lot less for the same thing. check here

The chromedome also came with my wannabee Gary Fong $12 kit. It seems to work well in times when I want the light to bounce around a little. Haveing it on acts as if the flash out put is higher. This is good when you need the extra light. I generaly use the chromedome for groups shots of 5 or more people. It's almost like a mini beauty dish, works very well. The Amber will add a small "warm" feeling to your flash photography.
It makes for more natural skin tones.

That's fine for you, but please remember you are not only paying for the piece of plastic, but also the intellectual and thought and design that Gary put into his LightSphere. With the $12 version you are just paying some businessman who stole the design.

Gary comes down pretty hard on the companies that are making replica LightSpheres.

Hi Tom,

I have not tried the Chromedome - to be honest I find I get enough flash output with the Lightsphere on its own, even outdoors, especially with the ability to use higher ISOs these days....

Thanks for the replies. Here is another reason I bought the Gary Fong.

I'm having great luck as is. Leave the top off if there is a close white ceiling and on if there isn't. This has to be the best general purpose diffuser out there.
