This Great Blue Heron has been injured somehow Not sure how this would happen unless it swallowed something to cause this injury.
Pretty sad. This is the big GBH I believe is our favorite out at Viera. I wonder if he will heal or not. Three views and a normal GBH (think the same one.
That is his tongue sticking out

  2. Wow, looks like he tried to swallow something with a fight in it. Sure hope he heals. Was he still fishing, Gale?
  3. Poor thing...nice catch Gail.

Hi Gale, I'm not too sure exactly what he's swallowed there. They are such greedy birds it could've been anything.
Here's one that has snapped half of his beak off...

    Hi Sandi
No he was sitting in a rather different location than usual. Not in or right by the water. He was not fishing. Just sitting quietly. Which they will do. But it just looked different for him this time.
I took these three images and did not notice this until it was up on the monitor.
First image 195mm, 2 was at 175mm and the third the close up at 400mm.
    I never noticed it.

The last pic as I said is how it should look.

I have not been back out there so I may never know. But I am sure if I don't see the familiar friendly very large GBH I will know.

I did see for the first time a GBH catch a rather large fish and spit it out. hummmm it kept getting sips of water and shaking its head. I wonder. I got no shots of that one though, so I just don't know. That was a different day.

I do believe that is the Mayor.
I could not bring myself to go back the next day.

These pics were taken 3/39/7 It has taken this long just to be able to process them.
So yeah we do get attatched to our usual sightings and friends there.

I used to talk to him.

Aw, this is so sad, Gale; I'm very sorry about the Mayor. :frown:

Over here, there have been incidences where Pelican's pouch had been slashed (probably by a person disgruntled with them?). Anyway, rescuers get them medical help who sew their injuries back up. They get rehabbed and released again (when possible). Not sure if your GBH can be helped ... ?

    Thank You Miko and Nico

I hope he makes it. He is a very beautiful GBH
He will sit a pose for you forever..You can get with in a couple feet of him
  13. Poor Mayor. I hope it's not him.
  14. Oh, I didn't realize this is the Mayor!!! Yes, stay away for a while, go shoot something else. Let Nature take the course - it's easier on your heart strings that way - sad to say.
Sad to hear, Gale. So sorry.....

    Yes Sandi,
I do believe it is the Mayor.
Look at the difference in size.
The one that is not hurt to him.

I did not want to go back to see anything.
Right, nature has to do what nature does

I wonder if it was a wound in a mating battle? I once saw a great egret and a BH go at it and those are really spears they carry. I've seen them drive them through many things - rats, fish, and actually saw a photo of a small gator speared.

Nice shots of "natures way" as the CH used to say.
  18. Gale Sad to see That but that is real life in the swamp!!!

    Yes Gary,
It sure is the way in the swamp.

But our Mayor is so pretty and so friendly. He will be greatly missed. He gave us all many laugh, smiles and great pics

So I will go look for him next time out and hope it isn't him.
Not that I want to see any of them hurt. Great birds

Well if it was territory mating tiff, I don't think he won this time.
