6:30pm game yesterday
D200 + sigma 300/2.8 on a mono
f2.8 - f4, depending on background
iso 200 to 640 as it got darker, this is where I shoot football and the lighting is 40yrs old.
This is only my 2nd time out w/ the big guy and it's still challenging to shoot in portrait mode.
I think this is a fantastic lens, especially for what they sell used for....AF speed and accuracy are noticably (duh) faster and better than my Nikon 300/4

thx Topher
i really a see a difference over using the 300/4 or even the 70-200 and having to crop so much...
Now the trick will be this w/e to shoot 5 games w/ the sig on a stick and the 70-200 on my neck...
I may put the sig on a tripod

Great shots glad top hear the Sigma is working out the AF is the only knock on the 300f4 so you will see much higher rate of keepers from the Sigmas I am sure

Randy;

I remember a soccer thread of yours a month or 2 ago where there was detailed discussion on shooting style (depth of field, landscape or portrait hold, isolation etc) and I think these shots really are a testament to some of these shooting modifications. Obviously a 300 f2.8 really helps (still wishing for one here!) but I much prefer these images than maybe the ones in the thread I referenced. Next thing is to try with a 1.4tc. A Whole new ball game, but very rewarding images when you get used to it (of course you miss a lot of close action)

Cheers and nicely done

thx

I have shot both styles for several years but honestly greater dof sells more pics....i try to not post as many of those here anymore...
Parents want to see their kids involved in action, foreground or background, so I mix up my styles.

I'm not sure I could deal w/ any more reach for sports though, 300 is testing my patience now on missing close action and this w/e I will be back to 2 bodies again

Is there any reason why more people in this forum don't shoot with the Sigma 100-300 2.8 to avoid the two body issue. I also have started using two bodies since I purchased the 300mm 2.8 and sometimes I regret not getting the 100-300 2.8.

i assume u mean the 120-300 and I considered it but I also wanted a 420/4 for birding and my experience w/ TC-s on zooms has not been good....
A 300mm for the 'shooting the ball' style I prefer is a real pain in the a$$ but IQ is worth it....I still switch to the 70-300vr by the 3rd or 4th game to take a break (I have a 2 day soccer tourn this w/e where I will shoot 3-5 games each day)
