I am planning to make some presentation videos about different species. Some still photographs and video to tell more about animal and its environment than what you can do with only still pics.

It would have some short clips like this ( proof of consept test):

But it would require better mic with some weather resistance. Any ideas? Maybe a shotgun mic?

End product would be something like this but about animals ( also only a proof of consept test ):

No, I don't think so. It's not a directional mic. So recording some animal noises won't be easy with that kind of mic.

You need a Sennheiser gun mic - either the MKH-70 long gun or the MKH-416 short gun. Both are expensive to buy new. http://www.sennheiser.co.uk/uk/home_en.nsf/root/professional_wired-microphones_broadcast-eng-film

Alternatively you could pick up a used MKH-816 long gun (or an 815) - they crop up on ebay every now and then.

Whatever mic you get, you'll also need a suspension mount pistol grip http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sennheiser-MZ..._Consumer_Professional_RL&hash=item3f08c783ec, a basket (i.e. a windshield) and a hairy cover for the basket.
