Hi guys
whoever of you is in Rome or other major italian cities will be surprised to see lots of people celebrating. Although it's not our national holiday (April 25th), today it's 150th birthday of the unification of our Country.
This is just one of the many images of the "tricolore" you can find over the net... We're actually exposing one out of the terrace.

Happy Birthday! I thought Italy was much older than Canada.
Well, in some respect, it is, but it's only 150 yrs we are what you know today. Also our national hymn recognizes that (it's the second strophe, usually never sung) - please don't read it literally, I did only a quick meaning translation, not a literal one ! It was written by a young poet., Goffredo Mameli, enrolled in the "1000" led by Garibaldi

Noi siamo da secoli
Calpesti, derisi,

Over the centuries we've been trampled and derided (by other Nations)

Perché non siam popolo,
Perché siam divisi.

because we have never been (one) nation, because we have been divided

Raccolgaci un'unica
Bandiera, una speme:

Now we have the hope to be united under only one flag

Di fonderci insieme
Già l'ora suonò.

And the time has come to do that.

I was only teasing you, Dino, as I was pretty sure that Rome was older than Toronto by a few years.

Thanks for the translation of your anthem.

Happy Birthday to your country, Dino. I will pop open a Birra Moretti tonight and celebrate

Did you know that my real name is Giusseppe? When I was in school, everyone including my teachers had a hard time pronouncing it so it somewhat evolved to "Joseph". My wife also liked the name so we gave it to our son. Now my son and I have the same Italian name.
