Long story short. I sold my 80-400 some time ago after buying the 70-200VR, but I have missed it ever since. The 70-200 is still my favorite, but the reach of the 80-400 was/is great, and I can deal with it not being the fastest focusing lens in my bag.

It seems to focus faster on the D200 than on the D70. Sort of like when your car runs better after an oil change:smile:

    Hey there Jonathan,
Something about the 80-400 VR lololol
Just keep going back to it.
    hummmm Me to.
Focuses quite fast on a D200 compared to the D100.
It WAS really a dog on the D100 for me.
    Almost sold it again..lolol

    Nice x-mas present :>))))))

Merry Christmas, have a great day.
Post some pics of that cold snow. :>)))

    Hey Gale....

It's been a while. I noticed that you've added a D200 and an 18-200VR to your arsenal. Can you tell me how you'd rate the image quality between the 18-200VR and the 24-120VR. I am very anxious to see if it's better optically. From the samples I've seen, it seems to be.

I hope all is well with you Gale, and it's good to talk to you, even if by keyboard!!

    Hi Jonathan,
I think the 18-200 VR is a great quality lens. I also think the 24-120 VR is as well.
    Hummmmm What to do. :>)))

18-200 wider and longer :>))) lol I really can't quite yet compare...Have not had the opportunity to run around with it as a walk around. Took a few pics yesterday with it. However did not process them yet. Very crisp quality. but so is the other one.. grrrrr.

Nice to talk to you as well. Have commented on several of your posts. Guess you missed them .. Real easy to do on here.

All is well...hahaha just broke. :>)) Really should not have bought new equip "yet"

Oh well I ain't going to live forever.. Go down swinging...lol

I also have a 24-120VR and will have the 18-200VR on 12/29. I love the 24-120VR, but if the 18-200VR is as good as others have said, I will likely sell the 24-120VR with my D70.

The 18-200VR is about the same size as the 24-120VR (both are 1.2 lbs, 3" wide - the 18-200 is 1/10 inch longer than the 3.7" of the 24-120). The HUGE difference of zoom coverage would make the 18-200 the best choice for ME.....

I will consider selling my 70-200/2.8VR too, but after using it to shoot at an ice rink with dismal lighting the other day, my appreciation for it went way up!

    Hi Ken,

Thanks for posting. I am anxious to hear from you after you've compared the two lenses. Please let me know, or post a reply on this thread. The one lens I'll never consider selling is my 70-200VR, it's an incredible lens. I hope that you decide to keep it.

  7. Jonathan - Congrats on the 80-400 and D200!

I really want both the 70-200 and 80-400 and the 18-200 and the D200. Oh the list grows and grows. I am hopeful the 18-200 will be a really sharp lens. And as Ken mentioned I too will probably sell off the 24-120 after I get an 18-200 as I do not think I would ever use it again. Unless I do get the D200 and my wife could use D70s with 24-120?

    Good move Mark,
Keep the 24-120 with the D70.
You wife will love the performance of it.. Unless she is already addicted with LLD....lololol

That Slow unsharp lens that folks speak of is awsom. I also have the 70-200vr but wanted more reach and got the 80-400. It is on my cam most of the time these days. With my D2H the 80-400 is pretty snapy for focusing. Dont think I will part with it.....

  10. Hi All,

I am so glad you started this thread. I am also seriously considering and hinting for the 18-200VR and the 80-400VR in place of my 70-200VR. I initially tried the 80-400VR on the D70 and was very disappointed with it. Can someone post comparison images of the 80-400VR and the 18-200VR taken with the D200 and the D2H? Thanks. I might just keep the D2H if I can lighten the load a bit...
