His and Hers French Press (D300@iso6400)

This is the first image I’ve ever shot at iso 6400 using my D300, preferring to use it as close to base iso if possible. Though newer sensors produce next to no noise/grain I am impressed with this result and think that with careful choice of subject the results are acceptable. This is approximately 50% of the original image area shot in RAW, without any noise suppression, and converted to b/w in Snapseed with a little sharpening.

Definitely very acceptable, Ben!
Kind of like a high iso film.
b&w cleans up the colours of the noise and solves that issue already.

I think the noise here adds a bit to the B&W conversion. Certainly not objectionable. As Bart says, it give a high ISO film look to the image. Funny that there are now some PS filters to add noise to our images.

If you didn't want noise from the high ISO, a few minutes to set up your tripod for this still life would have been easy enough.

Thanks Bart and Mitchell for you comments and advice. This was a tryout, never having used iso6400 before with the D300 and though the noise/grain would be visible on an enlargement I am heartened by the result and would not be put off using iso6400 if the circumstances required it.

Me too. B&W images are often improved with some noise or grain.
In Ben's image, the noise is largely confined to the background tiles and not as evident in the French presses themselves, adding to the separation between foreground and background.
