How to change flash power using TTL?

I have a Metz 44AF for my D600.

I use aperture priority with the flash on the camera's hot shoe.

However, usually, the flash is too strong. How do I reduce the flashe's power (using aperture priority)? I had thought of using flash compensation but this is only for the internal flash (I think or am I wrong?)?

The other thing I thought I could do was use exposure compensation but if I did that, the flash would only boost power to compensate the exposure (or is this wrong?)

Alternatively, I could use a manual exposure and manual flash but this seems a bit of a fudge since I have TTL flash gun.

I don't know how your Metz unit works, but if it works like my Nikon speedlights, you can set the flash compensation and it will affect only your external flash. When you set your camera's exposure compensation, make sure you know how it works: On some cameras, the exposure compensation is added to the flash compensation; on other cameras it isn't added.
