After posting in the new member area there were a few responses to post some of my snapshots so we can get to know one another. My kids are the reason I became interested in photography.

Here is one of my daughter. This was made using SB800 and SB600's with softboxes. I'm still working on posing. Its hard to get a 5 year old to sit still. Hope you enjoy and I am always open to critiques.

This is my 11 month old son. When playing with my kids I always try to keep the camera handy, because you never know when they will do something cute.

Hey CWilt,

Welcome to the forum. What great use of those flashes. Your kids are great subjects. Very nice portraits.

I also use multiple SB-800's with modifiers. Thanks for sharing and I hope you feel quite welcome here.

I forgot to ask

Which softboxes are you using? I'm using umbrellas but am interested in your experience with the boxes.

I started out using shoot through and bounce umbrella's but could never get the control I wanted. My setup is....

I already had 3 stands and 1 boom.
1 SB800 with Large Photoflex for fill.
1 SB600 with medium Photoflex for main.
1 SB600 with small Photoflex and grid for hair light.
1 SB600 bare for the bg.
All of the boxes are mounted using a Chimeria ring.

Let me know if you want a parts list for the setup.

Charles,

I would definitely be interested in a parts list for the Photoflex's and the grid.

Thanks.

Those are great Charles,

I was thinking about PhotoFlex but I picked LumniQuest SoftBox. Do you have any experience with latter ? Any comments ?

I will give you links to the B&H site if that is ok.

Chimera speedring adapter for speedlights
Strobframe shoe mount adapter This is what I used there may be better options though.
Photoflex fabric grid (small)
I also purchased this light modifier set for my medium (main) box

I hope this helps. Just let me know if you have any more questions.

Great pictures of your kids...the one of your son is priceless!
Thank you. I entered the one of Logan into Photo of the month but didn't do as well as I hoped.

Are you talking about the one that velcro's to the flash?

Jay,

I have one of those and use it for outdoor fill flash and some macro work. I try to keep my light source larger than the subject and that is why I went to the larger softboxes for portrait attempts.

Charles,

This is very helpful. One more request - which softboxes?

Thanks again.

Welcome cwilt, I recognize your portrait work from that "other" forum, glad to see you've found the cafe. I like the lighting on that first shot, in fact seeing some of your images is what convinced that speedlights can be used effectively for portraiture. I recently bought a second SB-800 to start experimenting more with lighting.

If I may I would like to recomend a book. The title is "Light - Science and Magic".
