I must admit I was dreading doing open heart surgery on my laptop but it was either upgrade the HD to give me greater storage capacity, buy a new PC or do some selective archiving.
One other possible problem was that although I live in England my PC is a US model and not fully supported in the UK.
So I did a bit of googling and found this site Drivemylaptop. I dropped them an e-mail specifying the model of my PC and they cam up with a list of suitable drives, in the end I settled for a 500gb Toshiba drive. They also supplied an application to automate the transfer of all the software from the old HD to the new. This meant that all system files etc were transferred so when that process was complete it was a case of swapping the discs. The transfer application also comes with a caddy for the old disc which means you can use it as an external drive via a USB link. The whole process worked exactly as they said it would and my PC is working perfectly just with loads more space for NEF files and if anything happens to the new drive I can just plug the old one back in
