Okay, so they say it's for animals but we all know it's for birds, wildabeasts, rhino's and more birds.

So, this is my family member's portrait. He's the only boy in our house (3 daughters and my lovely wife) and his name is coal. My wife is from West Virginia coal country and he's black.

Taken with D2X, 85 1.4 at F4. He's quite an exposure challenge and I decided not to reduce the contrast on the blacks...

  2. Tom, I would frame this one and hang it on the wall. It is a good portrait of Coal.

What a great fall portrait. The red leaves in the picture really add a nice touch.
  8. You are right Tom, family members do not belong in the animals section. This is great!

    Hi Tom

    Hi Tom

Coal is fabulous - I really love the shot but the credit must go to him - he looks superb.

My favourite type of dog and I am a big animal lover - you were right to put in portraits - he is family!

Hope you don't mind just had to try a smudge version of Coal.

Something I am trying to learn and thought he would be a perfect subject.

If you wish I will of course remove but hope you don't mind my go.

Once again - great shot - and lovely dog.

    Best wishes

  11. Hi Ray,

Nice job on the smudging. I would say you have really caught onto this type of art. Now if only me and Gale could get this done right...LOL

I can't get the picture embedded. But Tom here is my rendition of Coal. I did a sketch of him. Ray inspired me to get back to retouching, my first love :>>>

    Thanks melissa

    Thanks Melissa,

As you know it was a serious fad in retouching at dpreview and as then, I still find it difficult. Very much trial and error and this picture was so gorgeous I just had to have a try, even to try to learn.

However, I just love the original - beautiful dog and beautiful shot.

Anyway, glad the smudge seemed ok.

Very best wishes and hope that you and family are doing well.

    Take care

thanks to all for your comments

He's a good boy. I'll tell him all of the nice things you said. ;)

He's coal black and his ancestors (my wife's) are from the And the smudge treatment is really very nice. It makes a great painting.
