Agreed. Facebook has become a sewer. I'm so disappointed to see how many people I've known over the years feel the need to display their political opinions on FB. Who cares?
and then the arguing starts and always spirals to profanity
the cure is a pretty picture to smile at

I'm fortunate that the one Facebook forum I use has no discussion of politics. It's a moderated forum that requires approved entrance and I don't remember if there is a rule about not discussing politics. Even so, I hate the platform so much that I've decided after participating only several months to dramatically limit my participation. It's absolutely mind-boggling to me that a company so large as Facebook with so much money and with a forum that has been in existence for such a long time has a platform that is so horrible.

You are welcome to visit my Facebook page. It can't offend anyone. It has no information about me but it does have one post, which just says:
"I don't use Facebook. To contact me send an email."
(It doesn't give my email address.)

I have an account so I can access a couple of specialist groups. The "HP Calculator Fan Club" which I can recommend, has no politics at all.

I recommend using Adblock Plus (install it free into Firefox) as that removes most advertising and other rubbish, and not just from Facebook.

My wife and I have a rule, no discussion about divisive topics amongst friends and families. It's not worth losing friendships and alienating family over differing viewpoints. I wish my friends and family would get the memo! ? I just use social media to post endless videos about my workout progress and 10 years worth of cute kid photos! :D

I didn't use facebook for the longest time. But when I retired a couple of years ago, I joined up to keep in touch with family and friends. The last little while though, it has been inundated with nasty divisive political posts, that I'm seriously considering taking a break from facebook for a while. My hesitation is that I would miss the social posts from extended family that is spread all over the globe. Email just doesn't do the same, as social media provides an almost immediate interaction

I recommend uBlock Origin instead of Adblock, but similar approach.

This is the first year i've had to go in and block/mute people because it has gotten out of hand. The importance people put on their vote vs. their friendships is mind boggling. Yes, I like you as a friend and as you are but the ignorance and blatant stupidity has changed how I view you and it's not worth it to me anymore.

Still keep FB around as it's a good way to stay in touch with friends and family as we don't live near most of them but i've reduced a lot of my use there. I'm part of a woodworking project group and post pictures. Other than that, I rarely care about it.

I use both Facebook and Instagram to share positive messages about family and our lives. I have hardly any friends that share political stuff. I enjoy it and will keep using it. My church group has a page where information pertaining to that is posted. It is a closed group and is most helpful. Last week Greg and I were in charge of a blood drive. We posted it to the church group and had a lot of people show up. So, it isn't all bad. Of course, there is some controversial info and I try hard to ignore it.

I stay away from Facebook as I do not want to deal with garbage, period. I am so glad I am a member of this forum where no politics is ever discussed and people have been warm, friendly and helpful.

It's not worth losing friendships and alienating family over differing viewpoints.

My view about that will no doubt seem rather harsh to many: Friendships and family relationships that can be alienated over different points of view are friendships and family relationships not worth having. My one exception pertains to when young children are involved in that I refuse to allow them to be alienated simply because their parents don't get it; I'll put up with their parents until the children are old enough to be on their own, at which point I socialize with the children but not with their parents.

Exactly the same for me, since I joined FB. The email request is a giant watermark on my "profile" picture of a flower.

I do monitor the NextDoor site for my neighborhood. Lets me know which neighbors to watch out for. Now I read that FB is starting their own version of it.

I set up and administer a Family Group Page on FaceBook. We share our family related news and photos with very strict guidelines of zero political discussions. Family members in 8 different States enjoy the site. This site was setup in 2016 and the reason was obvious then as it is now.
