ID This Raptor

I thought initially that this was red tail, however when it eventually flew off, I was no longer convinced...unless it's simply a light colored one?

I'm at work and of course...the bird book is home.

Can't tell you what it is, other than a hawk, but it's not a redtail. I should know, looks familiar, but just can't place it.

Without knowing the size of the bird and the look of the underwing I would say it is a sharp shinned hawk. I have looked in my bird guide and this is the best I can come up with. The breast coloration is obviously going through some phase making it difficult at best to ID. The beak, feet and tail feathers looks like a Sharp Shinned as does the colored breast feathers.

It was definetly smaller and less robust than a red tail and it was bigger than a coopers.

Sharp shinned never even crossed my mind, but I'll bet that you nailed it.

Apparently a "light eastern morph juvenile red tail"

I wish I could give you all the specs but I can say that is one fine specimen and a terrific shot. I like birds in general but am completely enamoured with raptors. Thanks for the fix :D
