Great picture Karen!
Can't wait to hear your impressions!!I always enjoy reading your posts very much! Thank you for the great comments!
Well, after agonizing over the decision for a long time and changing my mind 100+ times I decided to trade in my D850 and get the Z7, adaptor and 24-70 S lens.
Ive only had the camera for 2 days and Im in a bit of culture shock as the size, weight, handling etc. are different enough for an old guy like me to realize I need to devote the time to learn how to use mirrorless! Ive never used an EVF before and its pretty neat.
One thing I can say is that because of the size I have the camera with me almost all the time and I find myself picking it up many times during the day. I know its partly because of the newness but I think a lot of it has to do with just how easy it is to handle.
Im taking it to the Phoenix Zoo tomorrow and will definitely share my thoughts. I know this was a big gamble but that was taken into consideration when I made the switch. Hey, if I screwed up I will just have to accept it and move on. Hopefully it will be a good thing for me.
The 3 biggest reasons I made this decision were the In Body Vibration Reduction (and additional reduction when adding a legacy VR lens which really helps people like me who have a bit of the shakes with 46MP!), Not having to mess with and worry about the AF Fine Tune and the size and weight of the camera and lens(es).
I also think that mirrorless is going to be where Nikon puts the majority of its effort, research and resources, but of course thats just my opinion and I could be way off.
I can totally understand people waiting to switch or to add mirrorless to their kits and that might be the most prudent way to go, but for me, I just decided to pull the trigger.
Looking forward to sharing my thoughts with you and thank you all for your comments. I enjoy reading each and every one of them!
best,
Rick
thank you so much acnomad! Im sure I will be asking a lot of questions and hopefully at some point I will be able to help a newbie Z shooter the way you folks help me!Congrats @greyhoundrick and welcome to New Z-land!
That’s a great write up and very much in line with what I’ve found, too. Beyond Day One, I grew more accustomed to the mirrorless EVF lag, and now feel that it is just fine for my needs. I do hope the upcoming native 70-200 is offered at a reasonable price, and am banking on an AF-C firmware improvement. If both of those come to pass, I would have only nostalgic reasons to keep my DSLR bodies.Hello everyone,
Thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts on my first day with my Z7.
Ive only shot with my Z7 once (today) at the Phoenix Zoo and compared to my D850 here's what stood out the most:
1. The EVF is nice, but so far Id prefer an OVF. Maybe that will change as I get used to the EVF. The slight delay is a bit annoying when you first turn the camera on. It can cause missed shots sometimes. Also, in my opinion, its not quite as good as seeing the image thru the OVF on a DSLR. However, seeing the Exposure Simulation is nice!
2. I don't think my 70-200mm f/2.8 VR works as well with the Z7 vs. the D850. Its just a tad slower to focus and doesn't track quite as well. Not a huge difference, but It is slightly noticeable.
3. Believe it or not, the Z7 is not as light as I thought it would be when you put the FTZ converter on plus add a 70-200 lens. I thought it would feel much lighter but it didn't to me.
4. The IBIS works very, very well. When I did nail focus today I noticed that the images, IMO, were sharper than with my D850. I think this is because I do tend to shake when I hold my cameras and the added stabilization made a big difference to me.
5. My Nikon SB-800 balanced very well with the Z7 camera and lens. No difference, to me, vs. the D850 + grip + lens + flash in terms of balance.
I truly think that the development of the Z S lenses is going to be the final determinate as to why I would slightly favor the Z7 over the D850. The F mount lenses on the Z7 would not make me want to switch to the Z7, but if the new lenses are anything like the new 24-70mm f/4 S, I would give the edge to the Z7.
If Nikon can boost the AF-C performance just a tad with future firmware I think this camera will be a home run.
Have a great day!
Rick

Exactly Phil. It feels just a tad clunky to me, but bottom line is I was still able to get the shots, just had to work a slight bit harder to get them. Also, I did notice a difference when I put on my 24-70 S lens. Still blown away by its speed and sharpness!Agree with you on FTZ. I think it’s a transition before more S lenses are available.
