Squirrels;...It KILLED me to pay $40. for this squirrel hood, but 2 years later its paid for itself in oilers. They still come around but have to content themselves with cleaning up where the birds scatter plenty of their seeds. You just have to make sure its far enough away and high enough from any jumping point. And, as another poster said, squirrels leave the safflower behind for the cardinals that love them. I do also have one of those weight sensitive feeders and it works great.
PS; my hubby made the feeder from a very old wheel of some sort and some screen. I love it

There's been some vigorous discussion about the merits of feeding native birds on forums here in Australia.

Expert opinion on whether it's good for the birds in the long run is mostly negative. We're advised if we want to be kind to our feathered visitors to put in a bird bath.
