D200 and the D300? I am trying to decide between the two of these. I can get the D200 for $809.00 cdn or the D300 for 1599.99 cdn w/o lenses.

What kind of things are you thinking about shooting? If low light performance (hi-ISO) are a concern of yours then the D300 would certainly have an advantage.

What body are you upgrading from?

I have the D40 and I mainly shoot my kids, family pictures and pets. I love doing outdoor shots but I would also love to do some indoor as well. After seeing many pictures on here from the D300's I just fell in love with how they turn out. But it is a little out of my price range atm.

Much better battery life and bigger LCD as well in favor of the d300. For the money you have now a d90 would not be a bad choice unless you want a more rugged body.

IQ wise, there isn't a huge difference.

The largest difference is auto Focus speeds on faster moving subjects, and above ISO 800, otherwise the D200 does everything pretty darn nice.

It is a very nice camera, and will train you for the D300 or other types of higher end cameras in the future.

Because of all the controls being easy to access vs in a menu like the D90, I prefer the D200 over the D90 for that reason, along with AF speed.

so everything is a trade off, D90, D300 D200 all are nice cameras, but I sure do like the AF abilities and tracking on fast moving subjects like birds and indoor events with lots of movement, If you use flash indoors, not to much to worry about with the ISO of the D200.

Cheers, good luck.

Almost $800 difference buys a lot of glass. I've got the D200 and have no intentions of going to the D300 which is already getting a bit long in the tooth. There's nothing that tempts me to go to the D300, if it's too dark, I have three SB600s to look after that. If I can't use them, I don't go.
