ISO test shots: 3 bodies, surprising results...

So, I bought a used D90 the other week and have been pleasantly happy with the results of high ISO use over my old bodies. The other day, I decided to do a test between my 3 bodies before I sold my old D70s (if that's even possible ). I was a bit surprised at some of the results. I would like to share what I did and what I learned. If anyone has any input as to how I could make this sort of test better in the future, please, jump in and let me know. I don't do this too often (ie, NEVER!).

First up: What I Learned
1. I learned that, although testing equipment is not the end-all be-all that many people think it is, it can be a very valuable tool for getting to know your equipment. The results of a test can surprise you. Having said that, I will qualify it by saying that I will certainly not run out and test whatever I by right away, nor will I make "shooting brick walls" a habit.
2. I learned that, in order to make the test valid, you have to make everything as equal as possible. Don't forget the details (such as WB settings).
3. I learned that the older body cameras are not as bad as I thought, although they don't hold up to the newer cameras... But the difference is not quite as big as I thought it would be, at least the way I tested the bodies...
4. i learned that my D2X meter seems to be slightly off. It gave me readings of 1/3 stop difference than my D70s and my D90... for whatever reason, it was about 1/3 stop darker in all readings and settings. I will have to keep that in mind for the future!

Ok, I think I will split this into several posts, hopefully not too many, but I took a lot of shots to compare 3 bodies at as many different ISO settings a possible. Here are the details:
I kept all the settings the same as possible: WB, focal length, ISO (of course), distance to subject, lighting, etc. I decided that I would actually run 2 test. First, I metered each camera at 0 EV for each whole stop ISO setting the camera was capable of. Then I decided to do a whole new series at -1 EV, or 1-stop underexposed, just to test some limits to the camera.

Please keep in mind that these pics are SOC. I simply converted to Jpeg and then resized for web. Every picture underwent an identical process. Also, I think the results would be more dramatic if I had processed the pics the way I normally do, ie, the D90 would show better results if the exposure for each setting needed to be "pushed" in post.

Ok, enough talking. On to the results!

Conclusions:
1. There is not nearly as much difference between the bodies as I thought up to about ISO 800 or so, although this is very dependent of how much light is available.

2. There is a noticeable difference between the noise of the older bodies and the newer body. The main difference is the color noise, way worse in the older bodies. The other difference is that the loss of detail with the D90 is noticeably less at higher ISO. I think because it has less color noise.

3. The noise of the D2X is much more tightly grained and controlled than the D70s (comparing equally old bodies). I really don't mind the D2X noise when I am converting to B&W.

4. I will be keeping the D90 for quite a while, quite possibly even after I buy an FX camera, mainly for my wife to use. It's a great camera!

Thanks for sharing your results. Looks like a very time consuming post and tests.

Harry Lavo (I believe) posted a similar type thread where he posted samples at base ISO from every single Nikon DSL-R made and I was quite surprised how little difference there is between generations (in resolution).

Glad your enjoying your D90 and you would be surprised how much your gonna miss your D70s and its tiny LCD, hah.

Interesting. Looks like the D90 does a good job.

One question: When you say that WB was the same, did you use Auto WB or a preset? The colors are quite different.

I understand you shot in RAW. How were the NR settings, as well as all the other settings such as sharpness, saturation, D-Lighting, contrast, etc., all of which may affect noise or sharpness?

A friend of mine printed a ISO 3200 picture from a D90 on A2 size paper. You wouldn't be able to find any noise, and it's as sharp as it can be with beautiful colors. He did do some processing, though. He couldn't have done that with a D70, that's for sure.

It was time consuming, but it sure was fun and informative, and I'm glad I took the time to do it, if even only for my own education.

Yes, WB was set to Auto, so I'm guess the difference is explained by how the different cameras read it? I've heard/read that some cameras are better at WB than others. As for all the other settings, I use ACR to convert, so the in-camera settings don't matter. They are all neutral as far as I am concerned... However, be that as it may, I have all my cameras set to 0 values anyways...

one thing though is that the tests should also be done with reducing light
which is where I think the bigger differences will show.

Yes, I could have gone further than -1 stop as I did in the second trial. I could also have shot darker and then "pushed" them in post... I just didn't have THAT much time!

Thanks ShaunK!

Very interesting results. Thanks for taking the time and sharing your results. You're starting to make me regret selling of my old D2H years ago.:frown:

You're welcome Bobby. I have always wanted to try out a D2Hs camera. I have heard that they have wonderful files, and the Hs was THE lowlight camera back when I first bought my D70s...
