ISO vs Dynamic Range

Discussion in 'General Technical Discussion' started by Elf_8, Jun 16, 2005.

  1. Hello everyone.
Just for curiosity : I am wondering if the ISO setting has any impact on the dynamic range of the sensor ? On a D70, for example, would the highlights burn out more rapidly at ISO 800 than 200 ? This, given one works with the same curve settings.

I'm not sure about the highlights - intuitively, it seems so, but for sure in the shadows. As the iso goes up, the shadows get eaten by noise, eliminating any detail that had been discernable there at lower sensitivitiess.

This seems like something that should be put to test.
